The usage of hydroquinone as a skin whitener, especially for hydroquinone that is sold as OTC drugs (free drugs). However, doctors, particularly skin specialist, are still allowed to prescribe hydroquinone. It means that, should be by a doctor’s prescription or under a doctor’s supervision. Before the ban, hydroquinone with a low concentration (2%) may be sold free without a doctor’s prescription.

Hydroquinone is including as hard drugs that can only be used by doctor’s prescription. The danger of using hard drugs without medical supervision, can cause irritation to the skin, the skin becomes red, and feels like it burned. Also can cause kidneys disorder, blood cancer (leukemia), and liver cells cancer. The usage of hydroquinone is have to be careful, because there is a bad side effect on animal experimental, which is can cause cancer.

Severe side effects that can be meet is blackish spots on the skin surface. Skin that is white clean, and bright is a part of the beauty concept for most of the nation that has dark or brown skin, such as in Asia and Africa. Human’s skin color is the result of various pigments combination, that is the yellow color by carotene, the red color by oxyhemoglobin, the blue color by reduced hemoglobin, and the brown color by melanin pigment. Melanin has the largest role in determining the skin color.

This thing becomes business opportunities that are meaningful to the cosmetics producers, beauty salon, even a medical clinic, that resulting as a tight competition in the business of various bleaching materials.
